New Zealand volcano erupts after a-century-deep sleep (VIDEO)

The last time Mount Tongariro awoke was in 1897.

The eruption at Mount Tongariro threw rocks a kilometer into the air and spread an ash cloud towards the city of Napier about 100 kilometers away.

Volcanologists believe Monday’s explosion could be the start of a bigger eruption.

“Hiroshima, that’s what the cloud looked liked, Hiroshima,” said one resident.

New Zealand authorities ordered people's evacuation as a precaution and banned domestic flights to nearby towns.
